History

The Provincetown Film Festival (PIFF) PFS first started out as the Provincetown Film Festival (PIFF) in 1999 as a means to attract economic development to the town during the shoulder month of June. Since then, the festival has attracted millions of dollars to the town and has become one of the country's preeminent film festivals. It presents a diverse array of American and international narrative features, documentaries and short films, while highlighting the unique attributes of Provincetown's rich and diverse history as an arts colony, Portuguese fishing village, gay and lesbian mecca, and a town first inhabited by Native Americans. With the support of a seasoned staff, many of whom have been with the festival since its inception, this past year we reached record ticket sales. Film submissions were up 30%. We solicited more than 80 corporate and community sponsors and 30 sponsors of inns and hotels. 100 individuals provided donations and contributions raising more than $600,000 in in-kind contributions. We also increased our international visibility with more than 100 press breaks, media spots, and interviews.

The defining honor of the Festival is its "Filmmaker on the Edge Award," honoring outstanding achievement, innovation, and vision in filmmaking and given to a film artist whose admirable body of work pushes the boundaries of the medium. Filmmakers honored with this award represent the breadth and scope of independent filmmaking-as well as the Festival's continued relevance and importance to the industry's leading innovators:New Art Cinema
